Having two copies of the app installed on one PC probably confuses things. Sounds like the installer didn't recognize you had the app already installed. Since then the company has apparently been bought out by some racetrack operator.
Nevertheless, I did a search on Reddit and found some pretty glowing comments, but they were all around three years ago. I uninstalled the game, went to the website, accessed my account, redownload the game. No dice, this useless piece of crap won't actually let me click any menu options.
Opened the "big fish game app" and tried to use it to redownload the game. I ignored it for a couple of days, but today tried to get it working again. After a couple of weeks, when I was closing in on acquiring the last plant seed, the game quits working. And just as an aside, I'll say Plants vs Zombies is a great game, my problems are with the distributor, not the game. Initially worked fine, though every time I exit the game the damn useless game app insists on starting up.

Ok, went through the whole download process again, got the game running.
Next I uninstalled the useless game app, which was a mistake, the game won't run without the damn "big fish game app" being on my computer. Buying the game signed me up for some recurring monthly game club, but I was able to go into my account and cancel the automatic renewal with no real problem. Started the download, found the site insists on downloading this "Big Fish Game app", was a bit annoyed, but once the game app was on my computer the game actually downloaded ok.
